Understanding FIRE
What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a lifestyle movement focused on extreme savings and investment to achieve financial freedom earlier than traditional retirement age (65+). The goal is to accumulate enough assets that the returns can cover your living expenses indefinitely.
How is the FIRE Number Calculated?
Your FIRE number is calculated using the formula: Annual Expenses ÷ Withdrawal Rate. For example, if you spend $40,000/year and use a 4% withdrawal rate, your FIRE number is $40,000 ÷ 0.04 = $1,000,000.
The 4% Rule (Safe Withdrawal Rate)
The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study, which found that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) has a 95%+ success rate over 30 years. For earlier retirement, many use 3-3.5% to be more conservative.
Types of FIRE
- Lean FIRE: Minimalist lifestyle, lower expenses (~$40K/year or less)
- Regular FIRE: Average lifestyle (~$40-100K/year)
- Fat FIRE: Luxury lifestyle ($100K+/year)
- Coast FIRE: Enough invested that compound growth will fund retirement, even without more contributions
- Barista FIRE: Partially retired, working part-time for benefits or extra income
